This box set under the generic title Jacques Payette. Photographies is made up of a set of four volumes.

Both an artist's book and annotated catalogue, it combines the visual fruits of a selection made by Jacques Payette from his impressive photographic collection with the observations, comments and analyses of art historian John R. Porter. The four volumes of the work Jacques Payette. Photographies are entitled:

I Roots (1963-1989) – 240 pages

II Elsewhere (1990-2005) – 228 pages

III Looks and games in space (2005-2018) – 228 pages

IV Workshops (1963-2017) – 228 pages

The graphics of the four volumes are the work of Jean R. Beauchesne.

About the author —

John R. Porter was born in Lévis in 1949. Honoured with numerous awards and distinctions in Canada and abroad, he was director general of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec from 1993 to 2008 before working as curator of the expansion project that led to the inauguration of the Pierre Lassonde pavilion in 2016. A professor of art history at Université Laval for over twenty years, he is the author of several books and the creator of numerous exhibition catalogues. In 2005, he played a key role in the selection and acquisition process of 13 works representative of Jacques Payette's production for the MNBAQ's permanent collection.

During his directorship, he ensured a significant place for historical and contemporary photography in the Museum's programming, himself taking on the role of curator of an exhibition devoted to the legacy of photographer Maurice Perron, signatory of Refus global in 1948. In total, more than 5,000 photos were acquired, recognizing in particular the exceptional contribution of contemporary photographers such as Raymonde April, Claire Beaugrand-Champagne, Michel Campeau, Serge Clément, Charles Gagnon, Clara Gutsch, Angela Grauerholz, Jauran, Ed Kostiner, Paul Lacroix, François Lafortune, Myriam Laplante, André Le Coz, Alain Paiement, Roberto Pellegrinuzzi, Gabor Szilasi, Sam Tata and Bill Vazan.

Remaining very active as an author, speaker, corporate director and consultant, John R. Porter still cultivates a keen passion for photography, a passion that dates back to the 1970s. In the spring of 2019, his exhibition L'empreinte des jours brought together 30 recent photos and gave rise to the publication of a catalogue in which historian and photographer Pierre Lahoud collaborated. It was his enthusiastic discovery of Jacques Payette's original photographs in 2015 that gradually led him to realize the ambitious project of distributing them in the form of this box set.
